Todd is crushing on her but too shy to get to know Tori. Tucker also knows cute, but odd, Tori Sleeper, whose father runs a lobster business. Tucker knows her because she is staying at The Blackbird and he often works on the grounds of the hotel. She is older than Tucker and attends a prep school in New York. Olivia Kinsey is from New York City and has been spending the summer with her mother on Pemberwick Island. Kent is often hostile and bullying towards Tucker who isn't as athletic as the linebacker. There's Kent Berringer, a junior who plays middle linebacker on the school football team and whose parents own the nicest hotel, The Blackbird, on Pemberwick Island. Tucker's family moved from Greenwich, Connecticut after his father who was a civil engineer, lost his job, while Quinn's parents who are ER doctors moved from Philadephia to enjoy a less stressful work life.īesides Tucker and Quinn, several other people round out their circle of friends. Both Tucker and Quinn are transplants to Pemberwick Island. The cast of characters includes fourteen year old Tucker Pierce and his best friend, Quinn Carr. The novel is set on (fictional) idyllic Pemberwick Island off the coast of Maine. It's smooth, with thrilling pulses of adventure set at exactly the right points to keep the reader moving along. SYLO, a novel about a group of teens trying to uncover the mysterious situation developing on their island, reads like a well written television script. "sequentia yconomus libertate te ex inferis obedienter" approximately translates to "Obediently following the guardian to liberate yourself from Hell.MacHale is both a well known television producer and children's author, having written the Pendragon series as well as the Morpheus Road trilogy. Who's the side we want to root for?Īnd the Latin on the side of the plane. ![]() I'm went between tolerating him to hating him. Seriously, if the world wasn't in big trouble, just go out already. She better not die in Storm either, I mean she did take a bullet through her shoulder and navigated a boat with one arm. Her dad is dead and her mother is somewhere unknown or dead. I almost wish there was that little cliché moment where Tori and Tucker are talking about their pasts, and Tori would open up more so we could see the real Tori. The Girl Scouts don't teach you how to takes care of bullet wounds. The sudden calm under pressure after Tori gets shot. The staring at the body in the downed SYLO plane for just a little too long. I think the beams transport people to some other camp. ![]() He was zapped with the light beams from the shadow planes, I think. There's probably some other reason they're working with SYLO. I knew there was something weird about them moving to Pemberwick because it was "safe." They are supposedly working with SYLO now, but Tucker's mom warned him at the fence in the SYLO camp not to trust anyone. It takes a lot of guts to take on that role. He becomes a leader and the group has no idea what they're doing. I like how Tucker isn't the wimpy back-up football player at end of the book. Stop reading now if you haven't read or are planning to read this book. I was definitely pulled in and it keeps you guessing. ![]() It wasn't a feelsplosion, it was just crazy plot twists. Okay, that might be a bit of an overstatement.
